Held each May, Dying Matters Awareness Week engages and encourage all communities and people in Britain to get talking about grief, dying and death in whatever ways might work for them. Prof Michael Tan has developed and will lead two events as part of the Sheffield citywide programme organised by Compassionate Sheffield during Dying Matters Awareness Week 8 – 14 May 2023.
2 May 2023
Dying matters
Dying Matters is a participatory performance which explores the complexities and consequences arising from some of our struggles to talk openly about death. It engages audiences to consider the importance of such exchanges. This work premiered in Sheffield in Nov 2022, and was also presented at Dying Dialogue Symposium 2023 in Toronto Canada (Online Premiere). The performance is a collaboration with between Michael Tan (Lab4Living), Ashley Barnes (SHU Theatre), and SHU Theatre students Chris Ellis, Rachel Leung, Ben Unsworth, SJ Harris, Connie Fiddament, and Holly Dixon.
Date: 11 May 2023, 14.30-16.30
Location: Lab4Living, White Building, 10 Fitzalan Square, Sheffield S1 2FH.
Information and registration: Eventbrite: Dying Matters.

When Seasons Change
When Seasons Change is a pilot nature-based creative engagement session that aims to ease and initiate reflection and considerations for end-of-life. The session blends the natural environment, walking, poetry reading, photography, and writing to offer moments for the participant to consider the things that matters, but more importantly, to encourage one to capture in words some initial thoughts and wishes for end of life. This is a collaboration with Mariana Garcia (Compassionate Sheffield) who is also a death doula.
Date: 14 May 2023, 10.30 – 12pm.
Location: Sheffield General Cemetery – The Samuel Chapel (Located at the upper side near Cemetery Road) Sheffield S11 8NT.
Information and registration: Eventbrite: When Seasons Change
