To mark World Menopause Day on 18th October, we host ‘Menopause And The Body‘, organised by our rapidly growing Hallam Menopause Network, plus ‘The Poetics of Ageing‘ an evening of Poetry Reading as part of Off the Shelf, and a ‘Gestures of Care’ workshop.
As part of a varied programme of activities and meet-ups in the White Building this Autumn, Lab4Living hosts ‘Menopause And The Body’ to mark World Menopause Day, plus ‘The Poetics of Ageing’ Poetry Reading at Off the Shelf Festival.
Menopause and the Body
Lab4Living is pleased to host ‘Menopause And The Body‘, an afternoon of activities organised by Sheffield Hallam University’s Menopause Network in the White Building on Tuesday 18 October. Designed to support those with menopause symptoms, this event features workshops on movement and nutrition as well as a chance to meet and chat.
- Movement workshop – a practical session with guidance and advice on movement, led by Phillipa Butler, Precizion;
- Nutrition workshop. This session is all about helping you find the right nutritional balance for menopause. Our guest, Sally Duffin, will share recipes and ideas from her book ‘Natural Nutrition for Perimenopause’;
- Refreshments and chat. Following the workshops, we come together for refreshments and discussion.
Much of Lab4Living’s work focuses on health and wellbeing during early years and as we age. I’m excited to host an event which enables us explore in more detail some issues often affecting the middle years, and equip us to support our own wellbeing.
Kirsty Christer, Network member and L4L Comms and Events officer.
- Event details: Tue 18 Oct 2022, 13.30 – 16.30, The White Building, Fitzalan Square, Sheffield S1 2AZ

Off the Shelf: The poetics of ageing
Off the Shelf is a city-wide celebration of poetry and storytelling. As part of the development of the design4ageing academy, funded through Research England, Lab4Living have been working with older people throughout Sheffield in poetry writing workshops. We will host a poetry reading event featuring work from the three anthologies which have been created.
- Poetry Reading. We invite you to join us on as we explore the wondrous process of growing older through poetry and prose. Taking the theme of ageing, the evening includes poetry readings from local writers about the felt experiences of ageing, readings from poems and writing by people living with dementia and provocative extracts from fiction.
- Event details: Fri 21 Oct 2022, 17:30, The White Building, Fitzalan Square, Sheffield S1 2AZ.
We hope to create a space where we can share, play, gain new insights and perhaps re-imagine what it is to be older.

Gestures of Care workshop
Michael Tan and Noémie Soula will be leading a Gestures of Care workshop. This is part of a research enquiry looking at rituals and physical aspects of care. The workshop uses creative movement activities to provide a space and opportunity for participants to reflect on and explore the non-verbal elements in caring interaction. The creative movement exercises will be involved with some partner work and occasional (optional) light touching.
The workshop asks:
- What is the place of listening in care exchange?
- What does it mean to listen?
- Do we only listen with our ears (What else might be involved)?
- Can our body listen?
In addition to the physical aspects of the session, participants can look forward to discussing non-verbal caring experience, and reviewing their values and aspirations for caregiving.
Event details: Thur 27 Oct 2022, 2-4pm, The White Building, Fitzalan Square, Sheffield S1 2AZ.
If you are interested in participating in this event, or learning more about this research, please contact Michael Tan or Noémie Soula.
